Search Engine Marketing..
StandardHello,
Well it’s that time of the week again; Blog time… Oh and I just realized that there are 34 school days until the end of the semester, and then I will have completed my Diploma. This week’s topics included Search Engine Marketing.
Search Engine Marketing is pretty much how it sounds, companies using Search Engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing…etc. to market their products. This is accomplished when people type in certain key words into search engines and the results yield links to a company’s website.
There are two different kind of search results; Organic Search Results and Paid Search Results. Organic Search Results are the primary products of a search engine and are the listings down the left hand side of the search engine results pages. These results are not influenced by financial payment and are referred to as natural (Organic) search results. Googles search Algorithm (the way they compile search results) is one of the best for spitting out organic results. Paid Search Results are also known a Pay Per Click advertising. These are the results on the right hand side if the search engine results page. They are associated to company’s paying for the results to show up with certain key words.
Search Engine Marketing is a great way for a company to market itself as it is a way to get more exposure to itself and products, because the internet is available worldwide and companies can choose what languages to advertise in to attract the best customers for their products and services.
I have attached two links that discuss in better detail what Search Engine Marketing is.

Affiliate Marketing.
StandardHello! So here we are, the end of week 7-only 8 more weeks to go. I am finding it more and more difficult to gather up the motivation to work on assignments… but the end is in sight (maybe that’s the reason for the lacking motivation).
Anyway this week’s blog topic for e-Marketing is Affiliate marketing.
Affiliate Marketing is an interesting concept, imagine yourself in a conversation with a friend of yours talking about the amazing restaurant you went to last night. You boast either about the amazing service, delicious food, etc. You then recommend that they go try it out sometime, you do this not to reap any financial benefit, you just like the product-this is called Word-of-Mouth advertising, it is one of the most complimentary forms of advertising. Affiliate Marketing is the exact same concept as Word-of-Mouth Advertising other than the fact that the affiliate receives some form of financial benefit, this is also referred to as SOPS (Selling Other Peoples Stuff).
I have attached a link to an interesting website that talks about smart strategies for Affiliate Marketing. The site describes what Affiliate Marketing and some points on what the author feels are the most important rules on Affiliate Marketing: http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/affiliate-marketing-strategies/
The core of affiliate marketing is a simple process:
1. An affiliate refers potential customers to a merchant’s Web site.
2. Some of those customers perform a desired action.
3. The merchant rewards the affiliate for each desired action resulting from the affiliate’s referral.
Here is a quick diagram of the flow of Affiliate Marketing.
Affiliate marketing-An agreement between two sites in which one site (the affiliate) agrees to feature content or an ad designed to drive traffic to another site. In return, the affiliate receives a percentage of sales or some other form of compensation generated by that traffic.
Affiliate (or publisher)-The affiliate (or publisher) markets the merchant’s products. The merchant has goods that need to be advertised, and the affiliate has the medium to publish those advertisements. The terms “affiliate” and “publisher” are interchangeable.
Merchant (or advertiser) – This is the owner of the product that is being marketed or promoted.
Now I realize this was a fairly short blog (Short topic), I have also attached another link along with a video that describes Affiliate Marketing for further information.
This site describes AM, and how it works. http://www.cj.com/what-is-affiliate-marketing
This is a 10 minute video from a Marketer- Affiliate Marketing For Dummies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlhefaMutPA
I hope you have a great day and hopefully we’ll see you next topic.
Thanks.

Online Advertising.
StandardGood Evening, Morning… Hi all! It’s the end of another week; I’m one week closer to the endJ. Projects are beginning to gain momentum as my creativity and drive are dwindling, and its taking me longer than I care to admit to write this… but the end is in sight, only three months to go. This week’s topic was Online Advertising, and what a perfect topic with it being the week leading up to Super bowl weekend. Now, I can’t say that you’ll find me plunked down on my couch this Sunday to watch, but as a marketing student I find all the advertisements interesting and fun to watch. My favorite company advertisements would have to be the Budweiser commercials- Not a drinker by any means, but I am a fan of Dogs and Clydesdales- did you see this “Puppy love”? or Last years “Clydesdale Brotherhood”? –Yup, tugged right on the heartstrings.
OK-now I think I kind of got away from the actual concept of online advertising, a bit. My apologies…
In simple terms, Online Advertising is advertising online… using the internet as a tool to get knowledge of your product to as much of your target market as possible.
All advertising whether offline or online have some specific objectives. Advertising builds brand awareness, creates consumer demand, inform consumers of the advertiser’s ability to satisfy that demand and drive response and sales. Online Advertising is done through many different message alternatives such as Map advertisements, pop-ups, banners linked to other sites, floating ads over other sites contents.
It’s pretty interesting how companies can pay for their online ads, first there is flat rate payment-pretty self-explanatory, right? Then there is cost per click, which means that the advertiser only pays when their ad is clicked on. Cost per acquisition is pretty neat; the company only pays if the ad delivers an acquisition of different sorts. Advertisers can also pay for ads on a cost per engagement basis, this is where advertisers pay for user initiated rollover ads.
There are many different ways to target your market.
- Geotargeting. Online advertising has the ability to target markets by country, province, or city and can even drill them down to something as specific as their IP address.
- Operating systems and browser types. Markets can further be targeted via operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Ubuntu or browser types such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.
- Connection type. Users can be segmented and targeted according to their Internet connection type, for example, whether they use broadband or dial-up connections.
- Day and time. Advertisers can choose the time of day or day of the week when their advertisements are shown. Advertisers can specify when their campaign should air, down to the minute. This usually depends on the client’s objective for the campaign or the product itself.
- Social serving. Web sites gather personal data about users and then serve each user with targeted and relevant advertising. For example, Facebook will allow advertisers to select specific characteristics of users who will be shown an advertisement.
- Behavioral targeting. The advertising network uses the profile of a user (built up with information about previous Web sites visited) to determine which advertisements to show during a given visit. Networks can base this profile on cookies or on IP addresses. For example, the network may choose to show advertisements for pet insurance on a news page to a user who has visited the pets and animals section of a general-media site previously.
- Contextual advertising. The ad server infers the optimum advertisements to serve, based on the content of the page. For example, on an article about mountain bike holidays in Europe, the network would serve advertisements for new mountain bikes, or advertisements from travel company’s offering flights to Europe, or perhaps advertisements for adventure travel insurance.
http://smallbusiness.chron.com/advantages-disadvantages-advertising-internet-4029.html this is a really good site that outlines the advantages and disadvantages of advertising on the internet. As well Mashable.com is a spectacular site that provides users with thousands of different articles that are extremely useful. http://mashable.com/2014/02/01/the-7-types-of-super-bowl-ad/ super bowl ads are no longer just televised ads- because many of the most popular ads are only viewable in the states; they have become just as popular online.
Well, hopefully I haven’t bored you, and would like to thank you once again for taking the time to read my …interesting (hopefully) blog
Daymond.
“ThinkGeek-Now shipping long stem kittens…”
StandardSo, once again I’ve sat down at my desk, getting prepared to get my second blog post out there for your viewing pleasure 🙂 -DavidsTea is brewed-here we go… Ready?
Over the past week in eMarketing we discussed Email Marketing; we also had a quiz, which I got 19/25 on- Thank you, Thank you- PLEASE, Hold your applause, 🙂 lol. OK, shameless brag aside-Email Marketing. It’s an interestingly complex yet simple way to market your company to the ideal target market.
Email marketing is a way to directly market using electronic mail as a way of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to a targeted audience. Every email sent to a potential or current customer could be considered email marketing. However, the term email marketing is usually used to refer to:
- Sending emails with the purpose of enhancing the relationship of a merchant with its current or previous customers and to encourage customer loyalty and repeat business.
- Sending emails with the purpose of acquiring new customers or convincing current customers to purchase something immediately.
- Adding advertisements to emails sent by other companies to their customers.
There are several key advantages of email marketing over traditional mail marketing. First, an exact return on investment can be tracked and has proven to be high when done properly. Next, advertisers have the opportunity to reach a vast amount of email subscribers who have opted in to receive email communications on subjects of interest to them. Emailing also allows marketers to reach out to consumers with personalized, relevant, and dynamic messages. Transactional emails allow businesses to respond automatically to important consumer events like purchases or shopping-cart abandonment.
There are also some disadvantages of email marketing in relation to the rejection/spam rate of the emails by the consumers’ email program, negatively affecting the delivery rate of the emails. This has somewhat been eliminated with the idea of “Opt-in” emailing, where the consumer consents to receiving the emails and therefore eliminates the idea of receiving unsolicited emails – Ideally maintaining emails that are relevant and appropriate to each individual recipient.
Email Marketing is a relatively easy tool marketer’s use as permission based marketing for their Customer Relationship Management, used to deliver a high Return on Investment. Email Marketing is highly cost effective, targetable, customisable and measurable.
Forbes. Com (link below.) has a great article on 15 tips for small businesses using email marketing. The site everything-email was another great site that really describes what email marketing is and how to use it, one aspect that really stuck with me was creativity. They talked about being creative in the email to entice customers to shop from your site, but first you want a creative subject line to draw the customer to your email first. The idea of creativity is where I came up with my title: “ThinkGeek-Now shipping long stem kittens…” I came up with this title by going to the promotional inbox of my g-mail account and looked at the first subject line in my inbox. Now think geek is a real site that offers merchandise in the geeky-si-fi, nerdy, retro end of merchandise- go check it out thinkgeek.com. OK shameless plug aside, back to the title discussion: when I saw that in the subject line, I didn’t know what to think at first- thus it drew me in to look at the email, and hopefully it drew you in to read this blog, reassuring the fact the creativity draws people in.
Now this wraps up my second weekly blog. Thank you once again for joining me in this journey and taking the time to read this.
Until next week…

Marketing with Technology and Today’s Society.
StandardAs each day passes and we march further and further into the future our society becomes more and more dependent on technology. So this is the idea behind today’s Blog- The effects of the Internet and how marketers market their products/services.
Now, as I sit here with my coffee, scouring the internet for useful articles, trying to get the creative juices in my brain to kick in- I am finding many useful, relative articles, just putting them into my own 300-400 “creative” words is the only issue… So, here we go I guess…
E-Marketing has become an essential tool for every business regardless of what the business entails. Internet based marketing in cheaper than traditional marketing, which in turn lowers costs and increases their Return on Investment. When a business implements any form of internet based marketing they are essentially opening their doors to millions of potential customers, that otherwise would not have been reachable- basically anyone with internet access can find their business. Interacting with customers- Social Media, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and even Snap chat have become beneficial tools that businesses can use to grow and maintain customer interaction. Having a way to communicate back and forth with customers, companies can benefit from the responses of their consumers, leaving them with the ability to be more dynamic and adaptive. As marketing becomes more internet based, customers can come to expect a greater urge for immediacy from companies, as e-marketing allows companies to be digitally open beyond the hours that their brick -and-mortar are typically open. Customers have the ability to browse shop and purchase 24/7.
For the most part the internet has had a positive effect on marketing; companies can now be more effective in adjusting their campaigns to match constantly changing trends. The internet is a spectacular tool to increase niche marketing and ensure that campaigns are seen by targeted demographics. Businesses are able track their customers with less difficulty, the article: “BUSINESSES ARE TRACKING YOUR HABITS–BUT HOW MUCH INFORMATION IS TOO MUCH?” shines a light on how businesses are able track their customers, through digital technology.
So this wraps up my first weekly blog for my e-marketing class. Thank you for taking the time to read this, I sincerely hope you enjoyed it, I hope to become a better blogger as this course goes on. I have also included a few interesting articles pertaining to internet marketing. I will also be micro-blogging on twitter, @DaymondPirie on a daily basis, and I would truly appreciate any feedback.
All the best,
Daymond.
